Prescription Only Medicines (POM-Vs)
Your veterinary surgeon can only prescribe POM-Vs for animals under their care. The RCVS (veterinary surgeons and practices governing body) has defined “under their care” as meaning having carried out a clinical assessment before making a prescription to have personal knowledge of the condition of the animal or current health status to make a diagnosis and prescribe. The clinical examination needs to done at the time that the prescription is issued.
The general policy of our practices is to re-assess an animal requiring a repeat prescription every 3 months.
This may vary with individual animals and at the discretion of the veterinary surgeon. Dispensing a prescription will cover the treatment of an animal for a 1-3 month period only. Consultation fees will apply when a veterinary surgeon reassesses patients before issuing repeat prescriptions. Prescriptions must be collected from the surgery.
Anti-parasitic medications – Flea & Worming Products
From the 12TH January 2024, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (our governing body) implemented new guidance concerning the prescription of anti-parasitic POM-Vs. Our vets must now conduct a physical examination of all animals before prescribing any further anti-parasitic POM-Vs to ensure your pet is on the right course of treatment and to prevent unnecessary use. This is to protect these drugs for the future, reducing the risk of resistance and to protect our planet – some chemicals in these drugs can harm the environment.
You may be asked to attend our practices with your pet for a consultation with one of our vets before any further treatment is prescribed. A reduced consultation fee will apply to these examinations.
Please complete the form fully to ensure we have all the details required to issue your pets prescription.
Prescriptions will take up to 72 hours to be processed and we will endeavour to contact you if there is any reason that it cannot be filled.
Please also note that orders placed after 4.00pm on a Friday will not be ready for collection until after midday on Tuesday. If there is a bank holiday please note, the order will be delayed by a further 24 hours to allow us to get the medication from our supplier. If you have any questions or problems filling out your request, please call the surgery during work hours so we can help.
